The England worldwide made a move to Anfield in August, after a time of playing as a wing in a 3-4-3 arrangement at Arsenal, and has scored two objectives for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Merson trusts Oxlade-Chamberlain is in an ideal situation playing far from the Emirates to create in front of Liverpool’s conflict against Arsenal on Friday, live on Sky Sports Premier League.
“At Arsenal, when you are playing with those two players [Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil] – world-class footballers – the common response is, when they kick it into high gear the ball, to search for those two,” Merson said. “You give them the ball, and they’ll presumably touch it 40 times more than Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“Straight away that thumps his chances down of having a decent amusement contrasted with them. I’ve taken after his profession from Southampton to Arsenal, despite everything I don’t know where he plays, I don’t have a clue about his best position.
“I think you must place him in the middle, in the midfield three and say ‘you are playing there’ and abandon him there for ten diversions. He plays one deviation there, at that point he plays wing-back, on the wing and he merely needs a position.”
Merson dismissed the proposal that Chelsea wasn’t right to let Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku leave in 2016 and 2014 separately, and contended that occasionally players just don’t fit the approach a club receives.
“Individuals say they can’t trust Chelsea let Salah go; he didn’t fit Chelsea. It resembles Lukaku didn’t meet Chelsea. He could’ve gone there. However, he looked and that and however: ‘No, I will play wing-back at Chelsea. I need to play in midfield’.
“Ideally he [Oxlade-Chamberlain] will remain in midfield and, after tomorrow, begin playing admirably.
“At Arsenal, he didn’t play with a great deal of pace before him; [Olivier] Giroud typically played in advance alone. It’s hard when you get into a place like a No 10, you are shouting out for somebody who can just go ‘blast’, and they are away.
“He [Ox] most likely fits Liverpool – they are very open, they have a lot of pace in advance. On the off chance that you were playing in a midfield three and you have three in advance who are as energetic as anything, it’s decent.
“It’s not advanced science – he needs to play football, and that is the thing that he is doing.”
Likewise talking on The Debate, Brighton full-back Liam Rosenior concurred that life far from Arsenal suits Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“You can perceive any reason why he needed to leave because the way he plays, he is dynamic, he is a fabulous competitor, and additionally actually, he’s an excellent player. He fits into Liverpool’s framework a ton superior to anything he would playing wing-back for Arsenal.
“He’s an assaulting player, Klopp has specified he needs him to get in goalscoring circumstances – I don’t know what number of objectives a season you can get from wing-back and I’ve played there – I wouldn’t get any!
“I don’t believe it’s such a great amount of an advancement thing, I believe it’s about a player having the correct attack of a group.”
